Fred Poulos, the community-engaged owner of Mombo’s Pizza in Santa
Rosa and Sebastopol, is back from Las Vegas and the International
Pizza Expo.
A highlight was the world pizza bake-off. Fred didn’t enter, but
he got a kick out of seeing the Best Traditional Pizza award go to a
Santa Cruz/Bay Area pizzeria chain called Pizza My Heart.
Fred opened the first Pizza My Heart with former partner Keith
Holtaway in Capitola in 1981. Their East Coast-inspired pizza was a
hit, and so was the artwork that Fred used in his decor and
promotional materials.
EAT PIZZA AND RIDE: Fred Poulos, who owns the Mombo’s pizza houses in Sebastopol and Santa Rosa,
is baking up what may be the greatest community bike ride ever.
On Saturday, May 14, Fred will treat cyclists of all ages to pizza at the Sebastopol Mombo’s, then
dispatch them in bunches onto an easy, scenic ride to his pizzeria near SRJC. Members of the county
Bicycle Coalition will monitor intersections all along the way.
Fred will encourage the riders to spend time beforehand collecting donations that will go to teacher
Beth Ann Turner’s band program at Brookhaven Middle School.
As if all that weren’t enough, Fred’s also going to serve up free pizza that day to everybody who
comes into either store, regardless of whether they’ll ride in the inaugural Mombo’s-to-Mombo’s.
